The Canadian Federal Government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has legalized recreational cannabis (pot) as of October 17th, 2018.  As a result of this legalization, cannabis companies have been massively expanding their traditional indoor facilities to meet the expected new demand.  Indoor hydroponic facilities offer very good security protections but are vastly more expensive than outdoor facilities.

How Much Does It Cost To Grow Marajuana?

The cost to grow cannabis below is in 2018 Canadian Dollars and represents the average reported by publicly traded large scale cannabis producers:

Cannabis Grow FacilityProduction Cost
Older Indoor Building$1.75/gram
New Indoor Building$1.25/gram
Greenhouse$0.75/gram
Outdoor (estimated)$0.25/gram

Why Does The Canadian Government Want Cannabis Grown Outside?

It is counter intuitive to have a government want any drug to be produced in outdoor fields.  Most peoples immediate response is that marijuana must be grown indoors based on security concerns.

However the Federal Government wants to obliterate the black market for marijuana which is nearly always grown in small scale, costly indoor facilities like home grow-ops.

As you can see from the table above, growing pot outside is about 80% cheaper than growing it inside, even including serious outdoor security measures.  That production cost decrease will result in an enormous price advantage for legally grown cannabis compared to illegally grown / black market / criminal pot.
