Conventional wisdom says that any American politician that votes against their party’s position will be severely punished by voters and loose the next election.  However, that facts do not support this.

From Civil Rights, to the War in Afghanistan, to Medicare, to Gun Control, those politicians that voted against their party to take a principled stand have won re-election.
